Windows 10 Stuck in Automatic Repair

My Dell XPS crashed with the following errors

First this:

Stop code: SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION

Then this after a restart:

Stop code: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
What failed: nwifi.sys

It looked like automatic updates were happening as the computer crashed.

After extensive Googling of the above errors, trying to start in safe mode but Automatic Repair kept repeating in a loop.

I disabled Automatic Repair in command prompt with the following:

In Command Prompt, type bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled No and press Enter.

When restarting I got a blue screen but the error that showed now pointed my in the right direction.

The Operationg system couldn’t be loaded..
File: WINDOWS\system32\drivers\avgVmm.sys
Error code: 0x000007b

This pointed to AVG being the problem.

I went back into Command Prompt. I went into the above directory using cd and renamed the file to :

rename avgVmm.sys avgVmmTMP.sys

After renamed the AVG driver file and voila the computer restarted without issue .

The above may look as an easy fix but I was trying to reinstall Windows and trying different things for hours.

I was just about to give up when I disabled Automatic Repair thinking maybe it was just a fault in that system. It wasn’t but doing this got me pointed in the right direction.

The file that was renamed might be important for AVG but I had enough issues with this program that I fully uninstalled afterwards and got a different anti-virus software.
